Intermodal Decentering Expressive Arts Therapy (IDEC®)

Expressive arts therapy has various sub-disciplines, and Dr. Paolo Knill is the pioneer of IDEC®. This intermodal discipline combines expressive arts and psychology. It primarily uses the five senses and sensory interaction to express and integrate artistic media, including visual arts, music, dance, drama, and creative writing. It connects and explores one’s body, emotions, and mind, transforming them into inner resources to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being and personal growth.

Intermodal Decentering Expressive Arts Therapy (IDEC®)

Features

Emphasizes the use of the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. This approach enhances the connection between the body and inner consciousness, allowing patients to experience the present moment and perceive their inner needs.

Deepening the Creative Process

We experience different art forms. Each intermodal transfer deepens and enriches our personal artistic experience, transforming and organizing our inner experiences and meanings.

Respect for the Client

The client is both a seeker of help and an expert in solving their own problems. The therapist values the client’s uniqueness and choices, and witnesses their creative journey and profound transformation.

Resource-Based

Clients discover their inner resources, nurture and promote personal growth, and learn to appreciate themselves.

Polyaesthetics

Humans are inherently aesthetically conscious, and anyone can create art. Clients, without prior artistic experience, can respond aesthetically and create beautiful works.

Low-skill, high-sensitivity approaches are a key foundation of IDEC®’s approach to Interactive Expressive Arts Therapy.
